As the first in a three-part series, it explores where the term came from, the aetiological factors behind Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and how the DSM defines it, including differential diagnosis and comorbidities. It also looks at how varied narcissistic presentations can be and the implications for treatment, while engaging critically with current research gaps and clinical challenges. This course is approved by the Australian Counselling Association for CPD hours and offers a solid base for the later courses in the series.
Narcissism is increasingly present in clinical settings, yet remains one of the most misunderstood and under-researched areas in psychology. This CPD event, the first in a series of 3 on the subject, offers a foundational exploration of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) from its mythological and historical roots to its current conceptualisation in the DSM. Participants will gain insight into the complex and often contradictory presentations of narcissism, including the nuances of diagnosis, comorbidities, and treatment considerations.
