In this third module of the Emotionally Dysregulated Clients: Supporting Families series, Dr. Ella Brent bridges key concepts from DBT and interpersonal neurobiology to enhance psychoeducation around emotional regulation. While terms like Emotion Mind, Rational Mind, and Wise Mind are common in DBT, they can be challenging for clients and families to grasp. This module reframes these concepts using Daniel Siegel’s “Window of Tolerance” — a more physiological and accessible framework.

Through a clear explanation of the body’s arousal systems, practitioners will learn to support families in recognising the difference between emotional intensity and emotional dysregulation. With the right supports, individuals can maintain regulation even at the extremes of emotional arousal

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this talk, participants will be able to:

• Explain the Window of Tolerance as a framework for understanding emotional regulation.

• Differentiate between emotional intensity and emotional dysregulation.

• Translate DBT concepts (Wise Mind, Emotion Mind, Rational Mind) into physiological language accessible to families.

• Assist families in identifying signs of dysregulation and maintaining a “volume control” system.
